This year I have the privilege to work with the Council on Aging as part of their ReConnect Program.
As many as one in four older adults experience mental health concerns that are not a normal part of aging the most common of which are anxiety or mood disorders, including depression. Staying vital and connected can help ward off the depression that often comes with aging. The ReConnect EISOA Program offers short-term comprehensive services to Orange County residents who are experiencing emotional challenges and overall health barriers, particularly those appearing later in life.
The Council on Aging’s mission is to promote the independence, health, and dignity of older adults through compassion, education, and advocacy. They strive to help seniors to remain healthy, connected, and protected.
The ReConnect program provides many services including comprehensive screening, in-home clinical case management services, individual counseling, peer mentoring services, support groups, education and social activities.
I hold monthly watercolor classes at their main office and also at other locations. Beginning in November 2019, these classes will become weekly classes. I love seeing the participants get completely immersed in painting during the class, have a wonderful time, and forget their problems.
My classes help the participants to relax, meet people, improve dexterity all while having fun at the same time. Since some of the participants also have physical challenges, the painting classes provide a safe environment for an activity that anyone can be a part of.
This is a closed group class. If you are interested in becoming part of the Council on Aging, you can contact them directly at the Council on Aging ReConnect Program.
